MAC Makeup - 8 Different Types of MAC Lipsticks

Matte lipsticks are a bit tricky to wear and apply, especially for the inexperienced. Colors may appear too saturated and if you plan to wear one, you’d have to also invest in a good primer.

From the MAC matte lipstick line, we’d most highly recommend Chili because we think it’s a color that would look great on anyone. It can also be worn in any season. 

Russian Red vintage red is a blue-toned red. You’d want to buy this one if you’re looking for a classic vintage look. Marrakesh, one of the newer colors, carries a reddish-brown tone with enough saturation for a light application. 

2. Powder Kiss

Shades: Devoted to Chili, Mull It Over

MAC’s Powder Kiss line is a personal favorite for me. There are several excellent color choices and the texture is lighter and thinner than Matte. Power Kiss feels very silky and the lipsticks are so easy to apply. This is recommended for those who like matte texture lipsticks but prefer a bit of moisture and smoothness in application.

I am a big fan of Devoted to Chili and highly recommend this color. It is silky smooth and easy to apply plus the color is gentle and sweet. It may not be suitable for any occasion but at the right moment, it’s the perfect complement to any look. 

3. Retro Matte

Shades: Ruby Woo, Relentlessly Red, Dangerous

Retro Matte lipsticks finish with a more solid matte than the Matte line. The color saturation is also slightly higher with completely no gloss. Many people say that the Ruby Woo results in the driest texture.

Moisturizing power: None

Our recommendation: Ruby Woo comes out on top of all the lipsticks in the Retro Matte Line. We find the distinct red color very suitable for Asians. It’s not too pale nor too obtrusive. If you don't want to make mistakes on a red lip, this shade will be something you’d want to consider. 

4. Lustre

Shades: See Sheer, Lady Bug, Cockney, Capricious, Spice it Up, Flamingo

If you’re looking for a moisturizing lipstick with a smooth glide and lustrous finish, the Lustre line would be a perfect choice. The grapefruit pink See Sheer and warm, red Cockney all give off a luminous vibe. You can also take your pick from the other equally attractive choices. You can apply this lipstick without the need for a primer due to an outstanding moisturizing power. Color rendering may fall a bit short but these lipsticks are excellent for layering if you want to achieve a higher color saturation.

Our recommendation: Spice it Up would be our top pick. It features a warm medium-dark red shade that’s very feminine and delicate. Cockney and See Sheer are very suitable for summer, especially Cockney, which is a beautiful strawberry red hue. Lady Bug is more on the tomato-red side and looks bright and fresh.

5. Satin

Shades: Mocha, Captive

The silky Satin luster is my second personal favorite texture, although I admit that the colors are slightly less pretty compared to the other MAC lipstick lines. Satin lipsticks have a semi-matte finish, with a medium-to-high color rendering and a medium-to-high staying power. It is an all-rounder like Powder Kiss although less impactful.

Our recommendation: Mocha is our top pick for this line. It’s a gentle and earthy color if this is the kind of look that you’re going for. 

6. Amplified

Shades: Brick-O-La, Impassioned, Morange, Dubonnet

This line of MAC lipsticks is characterized by creamy texture, high color rendering, and thicker density. The strange thing about it is that it doesn’t feel dry upon application but after the oil is absorbed, it starts to feel a little bit dry. I’m not a big fan of the texture but the colors look great.

Our recommendation: We’re crazy about Dubonnet's blood-red color. It's beautifully full-bodied and gives out a strong aura! Brick-O-La is a gentle rose color, very suitable for spring and summer

7. Cremesheen

Shades: Dare You, Sweet Sakura, Dozen Carnations

As the name suggests, these are creamy and shiny lipsticks with moisturizing qualities. The light sheen would require several applications if you’re looking for deeper colors. These don’t feel as oily as Lustre. Cremesheen would be a good buy if you need a moisturizing lipstick.

Our recommendation: Dare You is a must-try for those days when you’re feeling bold. It’s just the color to make you feel extra confident. It might be considered by some as an “aunt's color” but with the right styling, it can be a perfect accent to your OOTD. Sweet Sakura is a very tender and youthful pink shade that exudes spring and summer. Dozen Carnations is a personal favorite as well. I personally feel that it is a more orange-red coral color with white undertones. 

8. Frost

Shades: CB96

The last one on the list is Frost, which I didn’t personally buy because I didn’t find the color to my preference. This series features colors that appear a bit more metallic or pearlescent. If you like a touch of punk, you’ll love these lipsticks!

Our recommendation: I won’t make a recommendation since I haven’t tried it myself but we’d love to hear what you think about it!

Lollipop Lip Glaze

It comes with a non-sticky texture with a deep dyeing effect. I have to say that the durability and saturation are very high. MAC does a great job on this as usual. We’ve heard some customer feedback about how it makes the lips feel a little dry and that the color is a bit too strong when it is applied. It doesn’t glide very smoothly and you have to give it some time to dry. After a while, the color will appear good but in general, I would prefer a regular MAC lipstick over this one.

Lollipop Lip Glaze Recommendations

1. 106 No Interruptions

There’s very high demand for this shade. Try it once and you’ll understand its wild popularity. It’s a very light and delicate berry plum color that catches anyone’s attention. I did the color test and I’m very happy with it although I don’t know why the purple is heavy on my mouth. It looks really good though the color may look a bit different depending on your skin tone. Better try it on at the store before buying. 

2. Can‘t Stop Won't Stop

There are plenty of wonderful choices under the Lollipop series. It’s interesting how some customers would interpret the colors differently. For example, some would define the Can’t Stop Won’t Stop as reminiscent of summer orange soda. Some people say it is light red. I researched it and found that the light lip smear is indeed based on an orange tint. In general, I think this is better than 106. It is very beautiful and daily great

Forever Darling is also a popular color but it’s not something I would personally prefer. It’s a wonderful pinkish-red color but I feel it’s a little difficult to wear.

I’m not a big fan of the Lollipop series because of the texture and color. But I have already bought the lipsticks. You might want to give it a try if you’re feeling a little experimental.

—————— Oil Pastel——————

True to its name, MAC’s Oil Pastel series is nothing short of being true art pieces. The lipsticks have a very good texture that reminded me of cream mousse. It’s smooth, easy to apply, and moisturizing, plus, the color saturation looks great. There aren’t many shades available but I think the three best-looking colors are Fire Roasted, Smoked Almond, and Dionysus. Smoked Almond can be a bit temperamental so you might want to give it careful consideration.

The Oil pastel series is currently discontinued but we’re certainly there when it makes a comeback!

Oil Pastel Lipstick Recommendations

1. DIONYSUS

This one has a plum color, slight luster, and a texture that feels great on the skin. The color gives off retro vibes and a strong aura, but if you already own a lipstick of a similar color, you can skip this one. Personally, I think it looks a lot like Dare You.

2. Smoked Almond

Smoked Almond has a very gentle and beautiful milk tea color. It’s a popular shade from MAC because of this aside from the fact that it feels gentle and comfortable to wear. It would make a nice everyday color if you find that it matches your skin tone perfectly. However, if you want something livelier, you should skip it.

3. Fire Roasted

Fire Roasted is a dark brick-red, a tad similar to Marrakesh but slightly browner. The texture however is more moisturized. This is my favorite of these three! If you’re to pick only one from the Oil Pastel series, you should definitely go for Fire Roasted.

—————— Blush——————

MAC blushes have exceptionally long lasting power. I once saw a beauty vlogger who looked through her old cosmetic products and found out that the quality had not deteriorated for 5 years. I have some of these blushes, but not the most popular colors. But this time though, I will definitely want to take advantage of this 75% discount! Our recommendations:

1. Melba

Probably the hottest-selling MAC blush, Melba is also the first MAC blush I bought. It looks light and great with any skin tone. The color is amazing. It’s not so much as creamy orange as I think it’s creamy dirty orange. If you’ve seen the Oh Emma video promoting the product, it shows that the products make the face look softer than the real thing and how the blush is very versatile. I give it a high rating because it’s suitable for wearing in any season.

2. Peaches

Peaches features a creamy orange color that in my opinion is a better color than Melba. Although I really haven’t used Melba, I think Peaches is easy to wear and apply. I think it’s more suitable for daily makeup and commuting, as well as for creating a natural look. For the inexperienced, Peaches blush is easy to wear and apply. It’s also a very versatile choice. 

3. Love joy

This is also a great color for daily use. I usually wear thick eye makeup and this is my blush of choice because it does a good job of balancing it all out. Just rub it on lightly and I’m ready to go! I find Love Joy very refreshing. It sort of gives off a Japanese makeup vibe. The color is very natural. I highly recommend it.

4. Warm Soul

Warm Soul is embodied by a wonderfully contrasting nude orange color. It’s a defined enough color to be used as both eyeshadow and blush. Layer it on top of another blush to use as a highlight. Although it is nude, it also has a Japanese feel to it. Warm Soul is also very suitable for busy people or those who don’t want to make a big fuss about getting your face ready every day. I love wearing this blush when I go out for a fun night or party.

MAC highlighters are close to my heart. The powdered ones are incredibly fine and delicate for a smooth and flawless application. These highlighters don’t feel heavy on the face. Your skin also looks healthy and glowing all throughout the day.

Highlights & Contouring Recommendations

MAC Double Gleam Extra Dimension Skinfinish

I personally love the Double Gleam highlighter. If it’s the only highlighter left in the world, call me a happy customer! It’s made of powder so fine like flour and light and soft to the touch. It’s definitely right up there among the best highlighters in the market. As for the color, it’s described as a beige that breaks into silver, which gives a really gorgeous glow to most skin tones.

In addition, we will also bring your attention to the  MAC Soft Frost Extra Dimension Skinfinish. It’s a cool pink and purple tone that’s quite similar to the Too Faced Diamond Light Highlighter. I also like the color on that one, but the powder feels a little too thick and heavy. I am very fond of MAC highlighters and would recommend Soft Frost if you want a highlighter that’s vibrant and youthful. 

MAC single eyeshadows serve well for contouring as well as eye makeup. Many of the colors you’d find in its eye shadow collection would look great for nose, chin, and jaw contouring as well. For this specific application, our top picks from MAC eyeshadows would be Omega, Soba, and Wedge. 

Omega

Omega is a gray-toned hue that is especially suitable for contouring around the nose. It has a natural shadowy color and the powder is very compact. I have been using mine for two years and am very satisfied with it. The color rendering is not too heavy and it’s easy to apply. You have nothing to worry about if you’re still perfecting your contouring technique.

Wedge

Wedge is a brown tone that’s slightly darker than Omega. Expect a higher and darker saturation. This is a suitable contouring powder if your skin has yellow undertones. 

Soba

Soba has a slightly reddish hue and is the lightest among these three colors. We highly recommend this for fairer complexions.

To wrap it up, I’d say that Omega is suitable for any skin tone with its natural color. Soba is more suitable for white skin while Wedge would be ideal for contouring yellow skin, with its higher saturation.
